Deposit, insurance and vehicle check
This is the page we recommend you read before booking, with us or anyone else. Almost every bad car rental story in Morocco comes down to three things: how much is really held, what the insurance actually covers, and how the car is checked when you bring it back. Here are our answers, plainly. For a checklist that works with any agency, read is it safe to rent a car in Morocco?
Never cashed
The deposit is a guarantee, not a payment. Cash kept aside, or a card pre-authorisation that is never debited.
Returned the day you drop off
On the spot, straight after the check, with nothing held back. For a card pre-authorisation, only your bank may take a few days to release the amount.
No-deposit option
Available on most of the fleet: a daily contribution replaces the deposit.
How much is the deposit, car type by car type?
| Car type | Deposit in dirhams | Approximate equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| City car | 10,000 to 12,000 MAD | about €930 to €1,110 |
| Compact | 12,000 to 14,000 MAD | about €1,110 to €1,300 |
| Saloon | 14,000 to 25,000 MAD | about €1,300 to €2,310 |
| SUV | 14,000 to 20,000 MAD | about €1,300 to €1,850 |
| 4x4 | 20,000 to 27,000 MAD | about €1,850 to €2,500 |
| Luxury | 30,000 to 35,000 MAD | about €2,780 to €3,240 |
| Convertible | 12,000 to 30,000 MAD | about €1,110 to €2,780 |
| Van | 14,000 to 20,000 MAD | about €1,300 to €1,850 |
| People carrier & minibus | 14,000 to 25,000 MAD | about €1,300 to €2,310 |
| Hybrid | 14,000 MAD | about €1,300 |
The exact amount for the car you choose is shown on its card, before you book. The lowest deposit in the fleet is 10,000 MAD (about €930).
What the insurance covers, and what it does not
All our cars have comprehensive insurance. That does not mean everything is covered in every situation: here is the exact list, including the parts that do not work in our favour.
| Situation | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Collision with a third party | Covered | Excess applies if you are at fault |
| Theft of the car | Covered | Provided the keys and papers are returned |
| Fire | Covered | Excess applies |
| Broken glass | Covered with option | Included in the zero-excess option |
| Tyres and wheels | Not covered | Wear and punctures are the renter’s responsibility |
| Sills and underbody | Not covered | Typically caused by tracks and kerbs |
| Damage on an unpaved track | Not covered | Unless you rented a 4x4 specifically for off-road use |
| Driving without a valid licence or under the influence | Not covered | Voids all cover |
| A driver not named on the contract | Not covered | Name your second driver: it is free |
The zero-excess option (100 MAD a day) brings what you pay for damage you cause down to zero and includes broken glass. It never covers unpaved tracks or driving without a valid licence: no insurance does, anywhere.
How the vehicle check works, step by step
This is where everything is decided. Our routine is the same for every rental, from a one-day customer to a company on a year-long contract.
-
1
At pick-up: a photo check, with you
We walk round the car together and photograph every side, the wheels, the windscreen, the interior and the fuel level. The photos are time-stamped, attached to the contract and sent to your WhatsApp. Every existing scratch is on them: you cannot be blamed for it.
-
2
During the rental: you keep the proof
The pick-up report stays in your WhatsApp conversation. No paperwork to keep, nothing to lose, and you can look at it again whenever you want.
-
3
At return: the same routine, in front of you
We take the same photos, in the same order, with you there. The comparison is immediate. If there is no new damage, the deposit is returned on the spot, in cash or by releasing the card pre-authorisation (your bank may then take a few days to free up the amount on your account).
-
4
If we disagree: the photos decide
That is the whole point of the routine: the discussion is about dated images signed by both sides, not about impressions. If damage is confirmed, only the actual cost of the repair is kept, on presentation of the garage’s quote.
The full list of conditions is on our rental terms page, and every price is on the prices page.
Questions about the deposit and insurance
Is the deposit cashed?
No, never. If you leave it in cash, the money is kept aside and handed back to you as it is at return. If you choose a card pre-authorisation, nothing is debited: the hold is simply released.
When is the deposit returned?
On the day you bring the car back, straight after the check, with you there. There is no processing time, no bank transfer to wait for, no amount held back “while we check”. For a card pre-authorisation, we release it on the spot; only your bank may take a few days to free up the amount.
Can I rent without a deposit?
Yes, on most of the fleet (46 of our 70 cars). The no-deposit option replaces the deposit with a daily contribution that covers the excess. It is particularly useful if you do not want to tie up money or if your card has a low limit. Details on our rental without deposit page.
Do I need a credit card?
No. The deposit can be left in cash, in dirhams or in euros. It matters to many of our customers who live abroad and do not want to block their card limit for their whole stay. Full details: car hire without a credit card.
What exactly is the excess?
The excess is the part you pay if you cause damage. It equals the deposit for your car. The zero-excess option, at 100 MAD a day (about €9), brings it down to zero, broken glass included.
What happens if I have an accident?
Call us immediately, then the police if another party is involved: in Morocco, a police report is required for the insurance to pay out. We handle the rest, and we provide a replacement car if yours is off the road.
What if I get a fine after I have gone home?
We send it to you on WhatsApp with the official report, and you pay it directly. We charge no admin fee for this.
