Is it safe to rent a car in Morocco?
Yes, if you know where the risks are. The car hire stories travellers share on forums are rarely about the road: they are about the desk, when the price grows, and about the return, when a scratch nobody noted turns into a deduction from the deposit.
We are a car rental company in Marrakech, so read this with that in mind. The checklist below works with any agency, ours included; after each risk, we say how we handle it.
Can visitors rent?
Yes: passport and driving licence
What goes wrong
Deposit, old scratches, desk extras
Best protection
Total in writing, photo check
On the road
Daylight driving, watch for scooters
The five things that actually go wrong, and how to avoid them
For each one: what happens, what to do with any rental company, and what we do.
-
1
The deposit is kept, in full or in part
You find out the amount at the desk, it is taken as a card payment rather than a hold, or it is returned “later” with deductions nobody can explain.
With any company
Get the exact amount and the form it takes (cash, card pre-authorisation or card payment) in writing before you book. Ask when and how it comes back. For cash, get a signed receipt.
With us
The deposit for each car is shown before you book, from 10,000 MAD (about €930) to 35,000 MAD (about €3,240). It is never cashed and is returned the day you drop off, after the check. A no-deposit option exists on 46 of our 70 cars.
-
2
A scratch that was already there is billed at return
The pick-up check was rushed, at night or not done at all. At return, a mark on a bumper or a chipped rim becomes “new damage”.
With any company
Never drive off without a check you took part in. Film and photograph the car yourself, and make sure every mark appears on the damage diagram of the contract.
With us
We walk round the car with you. The time-stamped photos are attached to the contract and sent to your WhatsApp, and the same photos are taken at return, in front of you.
-
3
The car is not the one you booked
The website showed a recent model; you are given an older car, a smaller one, or one whose air conditioning barely works.
With any company
Book a named model, not just a “category or similar”. On the spot, check the air conditioning, the tyres, the spare wheel, and that the plate matches the registration document.
With us
Each car in our fleet is listed by make and model, with its seats, luggage space, gearbox and deposit. Our photos are labelled as illustrative photos of the model, and the car you are given is the model you booked.
-
4
The price grows at the desk
A low online rate, then extras presented as compulsory: extra insurance, airport fee, second driver, delivery, a fuel service charge.
With any company
Ask for the all-inclusive total in writing before you travel, and the amount of the excess. Ask which extras are optional. Prefer a full-to-full fuel policy.
With us
Our price includes insurance, unlimited mileage, delivery in Marrakech or at the airport, a second driver and VAT. Only options you choose are added, such as the zero-excess cover at 100 MAD (about €9) a day, or the 150 MAD (about €14) night meet-and-greet between midnight and 6 am, stated before you book. Fuel is full to full.
-
5
You pay a company that does not really exist
An attractive offer on social media or a classified ad, a request for a prepayment by bank transfer, then no car and no one answering.
With any company
Do not prepay by transfer a company whose address and legal identity you cannot check. Car rental without a driver is a regulated activity in Morocco: a real company can give you its name, address and ICE number.
With us
We ask for no prepayment: you pay when you collect the keys. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pick-up.
The detail of what is covered and what is not is on our deposit and insurance page. If you would rather leave nothing held at all, see car rental without a deposit.
How to check a rental company before you book
Car rental without a driver is a regulated activity in Morocco, supervised by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics. Before you pay anything, to us or to anyone else, run these six checks:
A physical address
An office you can find on a map, not only a phone number and a social media page.
A written total
The all-inclusive price, the deposit and the excess, in a message you can keep.
A legal identity
A company name and an ICE number, the identifier every business must print on its invoices in Morocco.
Dated reviews
Reviews spread over time, with replies from the company, including to average ones. A page of identical five-star reviews proves nothing.
No transfer before you arrive
A deposit or a prepayment wired to an account you cannot check is the scenario to avoid.
Clear answers on insurance
If nobody can tell you in writing what the excess is and what is excluded, you will find out after the damage.
What the rental contract must show
Read it before you sign, not after. If one of these is missing, ask for it to be added in writing.
- The name of the main driver and of every other driver: a driver who is not named is not insured
- The make, model and registration number of the car, its mileage and fuel level at pick-up
- A damage diagram with every existing mark, signed by both sides
- The date, time and place of pick-up and return, and what happens if you are late
- The total price and what it includes, in dirhams
- The deposit: amount, form (cash or card) and when it is returned
- The insurance excess, and what is excluded (tyres, glass, underbody, unpaved tracks)
- The fuel policy, and a phone number to call in case of breakdown or accident
- The rental company’s legal name and address
In the car, the registration document (carte grise) and the insurance certificate should be in the glovebox: you will be asked for them at a police check. Our own terms are set out in plain English on our rental terms page.
The photo check that protects your deposit
It works with any company, and it is your best evidence if the condition of the car is disputed at return.
-
1
Before you sign, in daylight if you can
Ask to do the check before the contract is signed. In a dark car park, use your phone’s torch and take your time: five minutes now is worth more than any argument later.
-
2
One continuous video, then close-ups
Film a slow walk round the car, starting on the number plate. Then photograph each mark, the four wheels and rims, the windscreen, the lower edges of the bumpers, the seats, the boot and the spare wheel.
-
3
The dashboard, engine running
One photo showing the mileage, the fuel gauge and any warning lights. It settles fuel and mileage questions at return.
-
4
Send the photos to the rental company
On WhatsApp or by email, before you drive off. The photos are then dated on both sides, and nobody can say later that they were taken after the rental.
-
5
At return, the same routine
Same video, same close-ups, with the agent there. Do not leave the car with nobody to check it, and get the return of the deposit confirmed in writing.
Is it safe to drive in Morocco once you have the car?
This is a different question, and it deserves figures rather than reassurance. According to Morocco’s national road safety agency (NARSA), 4,577 people died on the country’s roads in 2025, 25.5% more than in 2024. More than 70% of those killed were pedestrians or riders of motorbikes, scooters and three-wheelers. For a car driver, the practical lesson is to expect them everywhere, especially in towns.
Three habits cut most of the risk. Plan long drives in daylight: the UK government’s travel advice warns that poor lighting makes night driving dangerous. Do not drink at all if you drive: any alcohol found in a test means a fine and possibly prison. And keep the emergency numbers in your phone: 19 for the police in towns, 177 for the gendarmerie on country roads, 15 for an ambulance or the fire service.
Speed limits, cameras, tolls, parking attendants, mountain roads and real driving times from Marrakech are all in our guide to driving in Morocco.
Can you rent a car in Morocco as a visitor, and how much does it cost?
Yes. With us, you need your passport and a national driving licence written in the Latin alphabet, held for at least 1 year, and you must be at least 21. Other companies set their own conditions. For police checks, follow your own government’s advice on the International Driving Permit: the UK government, for example, asks UK licence holders to carry a 1968 permit alongside their licence.

Questions about renting a car safely in Morocco
Is it safe to rent a car in Morocco?
Yes, as long as you check a few things before you sign. The problems travellers report are rarely about the car itself: they are about a deposit that is not returned, damage that was already there, or extras added at the desk. A written total, a photo check at pick-up and a clear contract are your best protection against all three.
Is it safe to drive in Marrakech?
Traffic in Marrakech is dense but slow. The main hazard is scooters and bicycles, which filter between lanes and cross roundabouts without slowing down. Drive gently, avoid the lanes inside the medina and park on its edge. Our guide to driving in Morocco covers the local rules.
What are the most common car rental complaints in Morocco?
On travel forums, the same three come back: a deposit kept for damage the renter did not cause, a card charged after the rental, and insurance or extras added at the desk. All three are about what was, or was not, written down and photographed at pick-up.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Morocco?
To rent from us, a national licence written in the Latin alphabet, held for at least 1 year, is enough. For police checks, follow your own government’s advice: the UK government, for example, tells UK licence holders to carry a 1968 International Driving Permit with their licence. It has to be obtained before you leave home.
What should I do if the company claims damage I did not cause?
Show your pick-up photos and video, and the damage diagram signed at pick-up. Do not sign anything that accepts liability, and ask for a garage quote for the repair. With us, the pick-up photos are already in your WhatsApp: see our deposit and insurance page.
How much does it cost to rent a car in Morocco?
With us, prices start at 340 MAD (about €31) for one day and 280 MAD (about €26) a day from 7 days, insurance and unlimited mileage included. The deposit ranges from 10,000 MAD (about €930) to 35,000 MAD (about €3,240) depending on the car. The full rate card is on our prices page.
