Car rental without a deposit in Marrakech

You would rather not leave thousands of dirhams as a deposit, or your card limit is too low for a pre-authorisation. On most of the fleet, a no-deposit option replaces the deposit with a daily contribution. Here is what it changes, what it does not, and which cars it applies to, with no small print.

Luxury, 4x4 and premium cars

Why do rental companies ask for a deposit?

All our cars have comprehensive insurance, but the insurance leaves part of the cost to the driver who causes damage: the excess. With us, the excess equals the deposit for the car, from 10,000 MAD (about €930) for a small city car to 35,000 MAD (about €3,240) for the top of the range. The deposit guarantees that excess. It is a guarantee, never cashed: kept aside in cash or held on your card, and returned on the day you bring the car back, after the check.

So a deposit is not a hidden cost: if the car comes back with no new damage, it costs you nothing. Its real drawback is elsewhere. It ties up money for your whole stay, and after a card hold is released, your bank may take a few days to free up the amount. The exact amount by car type and how it is returned are on our deposit and insurance page, worth reading before you choose.

What the no-deposit option changes, and what it does not

What changes. Nothing is held when you collect the keys: no cash, no card hold. Instead, you pay a daily contribution that covers the excess. The amount is given to you in writing, with the total, before you book; it comes on top of the rental price, which stays the one on our public rate card, long-rental discounts included.

What does not change. The insurance and its exclusions are the same: tyres and wheels, sills, damage on unpaved tracks, driving without a valid licence or under the influence, a driver not named on the contract. Removing the deposit does not make the insurance cover what it excludes. The photo check at pick-up and return is identical, the fuel policy is still full to full, and returning more than two hours late still means an extra day, as set out in our rental terms.

Do not confuse it with the zero-excess option, at 100 MAD (about €9) a day, which brings your share down to zero and includes broken glass. They are two separate lines: if you want to leave nothing and also be covered for glass, ask for the combined price in writing.

Which cars can you rent without a deposit?

46 of our 70 cars, 22 of them automatic: every city car and hybrid, nearly all the compacts, every SUV and van, the people carriers up to nine seats, one saloon (Škoda Octavia) and one convertible (Fiat 500C). The cheapest is the Changan Alsvin, at 340 MAD (about €31) for one day. With this option, the deposit you no longer leave can be as high as 25,000 MAD (about €2,310), on the nine-seat minibuses.

Which cars are excluded, and why?

24 cars are not eligible: every one of our 4x4s and luxury cars, plus the Volkswagen Golf 8, Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Kodiaq, Kia Sorento, Mini Cooper Cabrio, Mercedes-Benz Classe C, Audi A4, BMW Série 3, Hyundai Staria, Mercedes-Benz Vito and the Mercedes-Benz Classe C Cabriolet. The reason is the excess: on premium and high-value cars it is too high to be covered by a daily contribution. Here it ranges from 14,000 MAD to 35,000 MAD and cannot be removed, but it is still a guarantee: never cashed, left in cash or on your card, and returned the day you drop off.

The closest eligible alternative

If renting without a deposit matters more to you than the exact model, here is the closest eligible car for the same use. No 4x4 and no luxury car has a no-deposit alternative.

Cars that are not eligible and their closest no-deposit alternative
Not eligible 1 day No-deposit alternative 1 day
Volkswagen Golf 8 deposit 14,000 MAD 610 MAD Renault Mégane 5 seats, automatic 570 MAD
Volkswagen Passat deposit 16,000 MAD 790 MAD Škoda Octavia 5 seats, automatic 590 MAD
Mercedes-Benz Vito deposit 25,000 MAD 1,460 MAD Hyundai H1 9 seats, automatic 1,220 MAD
Mercedes-Benz Classe C deposit 25,000 MAD 1,280 MAD Peugeot 3008 5 seats, automatic 790 MAD

The 3008 does not have the prestige of a Mercedes: it is suggested for its automatic gearbox and comfort, not for its image. For a wedding or a business meeting, see our car with driver page.

Standard deposit or no deposit: which should you choose?

Standard deposit compared with the no-deposit option
Point Standard deposit No deposit
At pick-up The deposit amount, in cash or held on your card Nothing held
What it costs Nothing, if the car comes back with no new damage A contribution per day, given in writing
Excess if you cause damage Equal to the deposit Covered by the contribution
Tyres, wheels, sills, tracks Not covered Not covered either
At return Photo check, deposit returned on the spot Same photo check, nothing to return
Your card limit Blocked if you choose a card hold Untouched

To be straight with you: the standard deposit is often the cheaper choice. It costs nothing if all goes well, whereas the contribution is paid every day, so it weighs more over three weeks than over a weekend. For a city car with a 12,000 MAD (about €1,110) deposit left in cash, the standard option is often the simplest.

The no-deposit option makes sense when the deposit really gets in the way: a card with a low limit you want to keep free for your holiday, several cars for one family, or an SUV or minibus with a deposit of up to 25,000 MAD. It also buys peace of mind: at return, there is nothing to get back. Ask us for both totals in writing and compare.

“No deposit” offers: questions to ask before you sign

“No deposit” has no legal definition: from one company to the next, the same words can mean very different things. That is not necessarily bad faith, but it is where surprises at the desk come from. Ask these five questions of any rental company, including us.

  1. 1

Does “no deposit” mean no deposit at all?

Some offers drop the cash deposit but still take a card pre-authorisation at the desk. With us, the no-deposit option means nothing is held when you collect the keys: no cash, no card hold.

  2. 2

What am I still liable for if the car is damaged?

This is the question that matters most. No deposit does not mean no excess: an offer can remove the deposit and still leave you owing a large sum after an accident. With us, the daily contribution covers the excess; the insurance exclusions stay exactly the same.

  3. 3

How much is the extra charge, and is it in writing?

A low headline price topped up at the desk with a “compulsory” extra is the most common bad surprise. With us, the daily contribution and the total are given to you in writing before you book.

  4. 4

    What is excluded?

Tyres, wheels, sills, unpaved tracks: this is the damage people discover at return. With us, the list is public, and it is the same with or without a deposit.

  5. 5

    How is the car checked?

Without a deposit, a rental company has no fewer reasons to argue about a scratch at return. With us, the routine does not change: time-stamped photos at pick-up and return, with you there, sent to your WhatsApp.

Flying in? The meet-and-greet in the arrivals hall and the key handover are described on our Marrakech airport car rental page. Each car also has its own page with full details, in French: for example the Changan Alsvin (in French).

Questions about renting without a deposit

Can you really rent a car without a deposit in Marrakech?

Yes: 46 of our 70 cars are eligible for the no-deposit option. Nothing is held when you collect the keys; a daily contribution replaces the deposit. The full list is on this page.

How much does the no-deposit option cost?

The daily contribution is given to you in writing, together with the all-inclusive total, before you book. It comes on top of the car’s rental price, which stays the one on our public rate card, long-rental discounts included.

Why are some cars not eligible?

Because on premium and high-value cars the excess is too high to be covered by a daily contribution. On those models the deposit ranges from 14,000 MAD to 35,000 MAD; it is never cashed and is returned on the day you bring the car back, after the check.

Do I need a credit card to rent without a deposit?

No. With no deposit, there is nothing to hold. And if you choose the standard deposit after all, it can be left in cash, in dirhams or in euros: no card is required (see car hire without a credit card).

No deposit or zero excess: what is the difference?

They are two different things. The no-deposit option removes the deposit; the zero-excess option, at 100 MAD (about €9) a day, brings what you pay for damage you cause down to zero and includes broken glass. If you want both, ask us for the combined price in writing.

What happens if I damage the car with no deposit left?

At return, the photos are compared with those taken at pick-up. The excess is covered by your contribution; damage the insurance excludes is still yours to pay, at the actual cost of repair, on presentation of the garage’s quote. Details on our deposit and insurance page.
